I was usually able to enter my username and password even though I couldn't see the login and then there was enough viewable screen to go to Applications->Accessories->Terminal and su to root and enter the dpkg command. Otherwise, you should be able to enter the console by pressing ctrl->alt->fn+F1 or F2 and log-in as root and then enter the dpkg command. You could also copy my xorg.conf file to a usb stick and then copy the file to /etc/X11/ once you get to a console. This would involve a few steps. So, I would just try what I described above first and then if that doesn't work we can go the usb stick route.
