It only works after a fresh reboot when the external
monitor was plugged. After a suspend of the system and awaking it again
the external monitor isn't possible to get any output anymore.

My eeepc enables the external monitor before suspend:
# Switch on external video port. Prevents hangs.
su user -c "DISPLAY=:0.0 /usr/bin/xrandr --output VGA --mode 800x480"
