There is a maximum virtual size for the frame buffer.
You can adjust it in the xorg.conf by putting a
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "Generic Video Card"
Monitor "Generic Monitor"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768"
Virtual 2304 854
