I just recently installed etch on my laptop as well. Although this one is a PowerBook G4. Sound worked out of the box without configuring. However, I did have the issue of sound on my desktop with etch. So I just ran the following commands.
Install 'alsa-base' and recommended packages from aptitude. * need to run sudo alsaconf to configure sound drivers and alsamixer to adjust. This should do the trick.
