Just booted http://www.finnix.org/releases/89.1/finnix-ppc-89.1.iso live-CD with a 2.6.18 kernel on my mac-mini G4 - no problem. I suggest you try the same, if it boots, try to check your kernel config. Compare it with that of finnix (under /boot/).
