yes, i had that here going the last year, but it died
and i was trying to replace it with a rebuilt kanga.
but although i have several time clone old disk and
run
a beige g3 off the clone, the kanga g3 will not boot
it...

well actually it may be booting but after the bootx
switch over the penguin looks like a red negative
(the old fashioned film kind := red tint only) and
no text appears.

i am studying its open firmware, i see it has a 3400
video chip in it somehow, may be a preproduction model
but everything else seems to be what the kanga specs
say. that is has chips65550 is supposed to be
chips65554. which sound like nothing but one is 32 bit
and the otheris 64.

appears to be ok with mac os so it hard for me to
return. i overpay sort blew my ps3 saving account...
but i really like the form factor as a seat where i
can type and think...

anyway, i was already into looking at kernel building
for the 3400 which was not booting right before it
died. i still don't know if it is just the machine
design or something wrong or both.

i was able to get penguin to look ok from a gentoo
cd but still no text (that never booted the 3400
either).

i am not sure what else to try:

a) install fresh and set up for quick or/and for
static network to link in from another machine
(is ssh in default install ??) or can i serial line in
??

b) try some more brands just to see what they do
(i mean probably either ydl3 or netbsd)

one final note, the 3400 booted problems 2.6.18 i
never solved. but here with 3500/kanga i am using a
backup
that booted either 2.6.8 or 2.6.15 and neither is
working now. i don't even want to hear about miboot or
netboot, this thing needs to boot off disk...

installer boots fine but the alternate consoles are
black, only the installer shell with silver b/grnd
and black text like OF screen. have tried both with
and without apple system disk patch (load base shift
4000 -> 60000) )

ok, there's all the gory details i can think of.

c) to look at options of framebuffer devices in
kernel source. somehow the default device here is
confuse. yes i tried video=chips; video=ofonly, ...
actually i need to have some idea what that last means
which is why i am looking at the sources now...
