For mirroring I use this xorg.conf:

Section "Device"
        Identifier      "NVIDIA Corporation NV17 [GeForce4 440 Go 64M]"
        Driver          "nv"
        Option          "CrtcNumber"            "0"
        Option          "FlatPanel"             "0"
EndSection

I then suspend to disk, attach the cable and resume. No need for a
full reboot.
