Hi, I own an iMac 333 G3 which I use with Debian Sarge 2.6.8-3-powerpc and I've recently tried upgrading to the newest kernel from kernel.org which is 2.6.17. I have downloaded both linux-* and patch-* files to a directory and I'm using kernel-package to upgrade.
Menuconfig done without a hitch, but after "make-kpkg --initrd --revision="xxx" kernel_image" all hell breaks loose. The build fails at net/drivers/e1000/e1000_main.c with errors in e1000_xmit_frame on line 2919, citing an internal compiler error in simplify-rtx. This also has a 50/50 chance of happening on the ixgb drivers. If I'm lucky enough to get all the way through the package build, which since the builder wants vmlinux.coff in my arch/ppc/boot/images directory needs me to touch that file (and setting HAVE_COFF_IMAGE in debian/rules to "NO" beforehand doesn't work) Yaboot fails on reboot after the "loading ramdisk" message. It'll display "ramdisk loaded at 0x . . ." and just sit there until I stab the hole in the side of my iMac to reset. I imagine this is the right list to post this to. Do any other G3 owners here have this problem and most importantly how can I rectify it? Thanks. R.
