The Apple-produced document is correct. If you have access to a
slot-loading iMac, connect a USB device to it & watch in amazement as
it boots. :)  Albeit, USB 1.1 is slloooooowwww.

In fact, for some Mac models (such as the "Yikes" Power Macintosh G4
for example), unless you want to invest in some PCI expansion cards,
USB booting is the only option for external devices (FireWire booting
was not introduced until the Sawtooth motherboard.)
