Thanks guys. Shyamal, it just so happens that /dev/sda4 is correct for me too. On my box its the root though. I just didn't understand the rest of your directions, and I am not used to the Apple partition. So I am probably *still* misunderstanding.
Ken, I haven't tried "ofpath /dev/sda4" but it may be useful in a few minutes. what I am doing: d'oh ... I am loading a small YDL onto the second disk, so I can manipulate yaboot. I looked at the conf file and it makes sense ( unlike the OF notation). Then I will do an install of debian on the first disk, and see what all the file names are. Then I'll boot into YDL, fiddle the bootloader settings, and I hope get debian up. It better be smp... maybe. further advice most welcome.
