No wonder, ppc64 in sarge kernels should best be avoided, and upgraded to etch/sid at the best oportunity. The upcoming beta1 for example or the daily builds will serve better. Or give the graphical installers a try at : http://people.debian.org/~luther/d-i/gtkdi/images/daily/powerpc/gtk-miniiso/vmlinuz-chrp.initrd nobody has tested them on 64bit machines yet.
