No. HFS+ has a special option at formatting time for journal. It's been
the default on recent OS X though, but it can be disabled. I always take
care of not enabling HFS+ journaling, that might be the cause of the
problem, but it's indeed a bit "harsh" if we are indeed causing the
drive to no longer be recognized in OS X just by mounting it.
