It turns out doing intensive disk operations was at least one cause of the problem. However, during the time that there were no reported idle jiffies, system+user+nice jiffies didn't add up to 100 per second as they should. Even though everything has returned to normal, I wonder why the system seemed to be losing track of what the CPU was doing. --Curby
