Not as bad as it seems. On IRIX which has even three different sets of libs (old 32bit, new 32bit and 64bit) usually only a few of every set are actually installed, because 64bit libraries are usually only used by those applications that really need them (e.g. there's normally no need to link all or even anything of KDE or gnome in 64bit).
