This might be a good point.  I will try when I am sufficiently sure that I
have found a configuration that works.  I tend to believe I have: since I
installed kernel-image-2.6.8-powerpc nearly three weeks ago, I do not have
"1904" any more.  Before that, I tried several other kernels (2.6.10,
2.6.11, 2.6.12) and even got the hardware replaced completely (except the
hard disk, but including batteries and power suppy), without success.  Sigh
