that could simply be that ofpath prefers to display aliases when
openfirmware gives the real system path.

given the bootloader failed, it probably took you to OF, which was also
accessible before by typing some cryptic key combinations (if it's not
<command><alt>+O+F, it is in the installation manual).

if there is a way to boot on cd, you could fix the boot loader using
chroot from a debian install disk. i and others posted instructions on
how to do this on this list. 

also using sarge instead of woody is more likely to work.
