Try to performing a HT (Hardware Test) with th CDs you got the machine with. If you have one, just boot from it and run hardware test. My tech recommends running it for hours, and you sometimes can set it to run for a determined amount of time, or number of times. I'm wouldn't want to run it for hours, I think it is a little intense, but certainly run it a good number of times as sometimes the test fails to find hardware problems the first time around. There is a simple/quick and a longer test.
My DVD installer CD also doubles as the HT disk. I just boot holding the option key down (and select the HT icon with the mouse), rather than the 'c' key. Hope this helps Mauro PS-Last thing, I don't know if I mentioned this but if you cleared the pram your boot loader probably will not work (so gnu-linux will not boot). So if you only have linux on it (no Mac OS) you'll get nothing at startup. First try booting holding the option key and select the drive on apple's graphical boot loader that comes up with the tux on/over it (if you have the HT CD/DVD inserted you can also select the HT to run the HT test).
