Hm, I tried to express something different: Is the kernel on the boot-floppies doing a "detour" over OF to reach the screen or is it just accessing the graphics-card directly (i suppose the latter one)? If it would be using the first method, would the debian-installer appear on the serial-console when I set OF to use it?

I had (luckily) no problems to redirect the OF console to the Mach64, the output-device is "/bandit/ATY,mach64" as stated on http://penguinppc.org/projects/quik/defaults.shtml -> quirks.
