i would just upgrade your whole system to unstable
its not actually unstable, just not ridiculously conservatively
stable
if i was running a server i would stick with stable, but
for desktops (i dont see why amsn would be running on a server)
i would go unstable all the way.

Sure, no sweat. Just edit your /etc/apt/sources.list and wherever you
see the word "stable", change it to "unstable". Then "apt-get update",
then "apt-get install the_package_you_want". After your done, don't
forget to change your source.list back to the way it was and apt-get
update again.
Do not do that. You will end up with a mixture of woody and sid packages which
might break some things.
Use www.backports.org or www.apt-get.org to check for some packages which have
been backported.
Or upgrade to sid. I have had few problems in the last years with it. Or to
Sarge which will become the next stable quite soon (hopefully).
