This is probably one of the reasons why you are seeing poor performance

Thanks :)
Did it have any effects on your experiments?
I used to get slightly better performance from xine with my iBook G3
600MHz than with mplayer, when I tried to play DVDs with it. Now, I gave
up trying to use it for this purpose.
Unfortunately, with DVDs that are interlaced (and all DVDs that I have
are interlaced), deinterlacing is also needed and there goes some extra
cycles, putting even more load on the CPU.
I even contributed a C version of linearblend deinterlacing to xine and
tried to hack on the code of mplayer, but the code had little standards
and the (lack of) indentation prevented me from doing things that I
wanted to experiment with the code (it prevented a proper reading of the
code).
It was a mess and the developers didn't want anybody to change the
indentation.
