pbbuttonsd has the ability to return the function keys to their expected
behavior (that is, as real function keys, not the Apple-specific
behavior). It's set in /etc/pbbuttons/pbbuttonsd.conf:

        KBDMode = fkeysfirst

Works a treat on my Titanium III. The Apple-specific features
(backlight, volume, etc.) can still be reached, only now they're the
ones that require you to press the 'fn' key.
