solved one half of the problem now....

that one is solved. googling a little bit more, i found a suggestion
from 2 years ago to use the apple key instead of alt and this worked.
looking again at my keyboard configuration, i realized that the debian
installer i used (TC 1) set up console-data to leave the kernel keymap
as is. after re-configuring it to use a british keymap, it is the
alt-key now, just as expected.
hm, the installer was used about 1 week ago, so i do not know if d-i
asked me for the keymap and then forgot about it or it did not ask me at
all or i did not answer to its question (correctly) for the
right keymap...
