Well, there is the kernel ring buffer itself, accessible via the dmesg command and also stored in /var/log/dmesg directly after boot. If you are lucky, you may find an oops in the logs, which you can then trace with ksymoops. For even more information, build a debugger such as xmon into the kernel.
