You're missing XFree86 correct configuration. You probably have an ATI Radeon graphics chipset which needs DRI support. You need a special XFree server and a kernel module (only for 2.4.x kernels, is included in 2.6.x). Mr. Michael Dänzer maintains a wonderful set of Debian packages with DRI compiled in.
