If you install hotplug, then you won't have to manually load the usb-storage module, since it will be automatically loaded when you plug your USB drive and automatically removed when you unplug it. > How do I get Debian to recognize this usb storage device? One of them is to create a file called /etc/filesystems that contains the possible filesystem types that you want to mount. This way, whenever you have to mount a filesystem, the mount command will check that file to see what filesystems it can use in case there is an auto keyword in the /etc/fstab field that specifies the fs type. Since you seem to be using a stock kernel from Debian, the vfat module should be available. Read more about the process above in the mount manual page.
