Powerbook Lombard cdrom drive

Hi,
I have some problems using my internal CDRom drive with new kernels
(>2.4.18). Basically
kernel: hdc: packet command error: error=0x34
kernel: hdc: packet command error: status=0x51 { DriveRead

in logs and the drive refuses to mount CDs. Kernel 2.4.18 is the latest to
work fine. Does anyone experiences the same as me, or better found a
solution?
This happens without using hdparm on the drive.
