I have not yet used Darwin, so I don't know about it, but I have used XFree86 under MacOS X and I thought it was slower than when I used it under Linux. That is, of course, quite subjective (perhaps that's a placebo effect), but, OTOH, my experience may be due to the limited amount of RAM that I have on my iBook.
