Hi,

I've been having problems playing DVDs under Linux since I bought the
iBook back in March. Playing DVDs under OS X works fine, but I'm
usually not running OS X.

I've compiled a current benh-kernel (2.4.22-pre4-ben0 right now) and
also the dri-trunk modules from Debian unstable. Direct Rendering works
(at least glxinfo says so) and I have acceptable framerates in e.g.
tuxracer (no less than 33 fps, sometimes in the 50s).

Playing divx movies seems to work. No problems there.

However when playing DVDs in mplayer the video is very, very slow
compared to the audio. When I use -framedrop everything is in sync, but
the video is not smooth at all. When I use -hardframedrop, mplayer
crashes. In xine (gxine) the video looks like in mplayer with
-framedrop.

Some more info:

I'm using the OSS emulation of ALSA 0.9. This is a huge improvement
over the dma_powermac sound driver, with dma_powermac even divx aren't
working.

Performance seems to be better when using ide-cd instead of of scsi-cd
with ide-scsi emulation.

Also, `hdparm -c 1 /dev/hdb` (to enable 32-bit IO_Support) hangs my
machine.

Any suggestions?

TIA,
Viktor
