well in a very silent room the harddisk is actually noticable... anyway I don't know whether linux supports this, but is it actually possible to have say ext3/xfs or reiserfs with the harddisk going to standby if there is no heavy disk activity (say I am willing to waste 100MB for a writing buffer before any disk activity starts).
