My gpm.conf file looks like this

#  /etc/gpm.conf - configuration file for gpm(1)
device=/dev/input/mice
responsiveness=
repeat_type=ms3
type=ps2
append=""

And the Mouse section of my XF86Config-4 looks like
this:

Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier      "Generic Mouse"
        Driver          "mouse"
        Option          "CorePointer"
        Option          "SendCoreEvents"        "true"
        Option          "Device"                "/dev/input/mice"
        Option          "Protocol"              "ImPS/2"
        Option          "Emulate3Buttons"       "true"
        Option          "ZAxisMapping"          "4 5"
EndSection

Hope this helps
