        Well, that's right.

Even if I have XFree86 4.2, with DRI and the XVideo extension
enabled, I can't get my iBook 2 600MHz playing DVDs without
dropped frames with xine. I remember that with mplayer, things
        were a bit worse.

Unfortunately, the G3 processors in the iBooks don't have
altivec, which means that the altivec optimizations of some of
the mpeg2 libraries don't have any effects on iBooks.

As was discussed on this mailing list before, Apple can play
DVDs on MacOS X or MacOS 9 because they know the interface
used by ATI to the graphic card's hardware acceleration for
decoding DVDs (inverse discrete cosine transform and motion
        compensation). These extensions seem undocumented.

I don't know if running MacOS X under mol would be able to
play DVDs nicely. I'd guess no, but hey, who knows? :-) I
        never tried. :-)
