When I played with this a couple of weeks ago I noticed that getting a
steady picture is depending on if the monitor is connected at boot time
or not.

If I remember correctly it was like this:

Monitor connected at boot time:
Picture is steady but some leftovers in the bottom of the screen and
palette corruption when using some color depths. The picture is
also "zoomed" in on the upper left corner of the screen, different
amounts depending on the color depth.

Monitor not connected at boot time:
Picture is unstable and wobbly but otherwise seems to be correct (no
leftovers in the bottom of the screen, right colors and screen size
    etc).

I didn't know what else to do/try after this so I just gave up on
getting an external monitor to work for now.
