Thanks. This happened with a fresh installation from the Debian 3 CDs (burned from ISO images). Maybe I should uninstall XFree86 and friends and reinstall it from a http source? What would be the commands to accomplish that? I would be willing to reinstall Debian yet again, but there is nothing that I could do differently with respect to this problem. Thanks.
