First check your /boot/config-<kernelversion> for a line like:
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDECD
it should be set to either 'y' (compiled in) or 'm' (a module that needs
to be loaded). If it's 'm' do an 'lsmod' and see if ide-cd.o is loaded.
If not, do a 'modprobe ide-cd'. Also, make sure there's a symlink from
your cd device to /dev/cdrom. Also make sure you're a member of the 'cdrom'
group.

I'm using the stock kernel from Woody. Wouldn't it have to be loaded if
I can mount a data CD? What module would I be looking for (ide-cd?)?
Scott
/dev/hdb is likned to /dev/cdrom.
I am a member of the cdrom group.
/dev/hdb has also been set to the cdrom group.
I'll double check the module stuff tonight as my iBook is at home.
I missed the beginning, but you are aware that there's no audio
connection from the CD-ROM to the sound card?
Not aware of that. Why would Apple do such a thing?
Anyway, shouldn't I still be able to play the audio CD without this
connection; I just wouldn't hear anything...
you have to playback digitally. Install the xmms-audiocd plugin IIRC.
I'll try that tonight. Won't I still have problems reading the CD though?
