Oh, now I saw that and the patch is indeed quite small.

Thanks, that was it. I forgot to re-create /dev/apm_bios after
I deleted Mandrake 8.2 (which claimed to be G3 optimized) and
reinstalled woody. Now it works fine.

Ok, but since I am already exposing my ignorance, let me ask
you one more thing: since I installed a recent benh kernel to
have DMA working, X is a bit faster as I already reported, but
I saw that glxinfo and XFree86.0.log say different things
        about DRI.

In fact, XFree86.0.log says "(II) R128(0): Direct rendering
enabled" but glxgears has lower framerates than what I used to
        have with Debian's X 4.1.0.1 and glxinfo contradicts the X 4.2
log saying that direct rendering is not enabled.

Do you happen to know the cause? Am I doing something wrong
        with my configuration?

If you want to see the log of X 4.2, I just uploaded it to
<http://homepage.mac.com/linuxsup/>. So, at least that Apple
        account serves for something. :-)

If you want to see other information, please let me know.

        Thanks for your help, Roger...
