Yes, it works. I used ResEdit to patch the System on my floppy disk, just adding root=/dev/hda7, and it works to boot my system. I patched the System.bin in CVS using beav, to add /dev/hda8 (IIRC that's what you are using now) and generated a new floppy image with that mod made. I'll send it to you in a separate mail. I assumed you were using a fairly recent version of boot-floppies, (within the last couple of months), the powermac flavor.
