Actually, I think it told you something along the lines that it couldn't find a Section "Device" matching your graphics chip. The reason why it normally isn't necessary to specify a bus ID on i386 is that the X server assigns such a Section "Device" to the primary adapter, i.e. the one the BIOS came up on.
