What model of G4 do you have ? More specifically, what kind of sound
chip does it have ? (displayed in dmesg when you insmod the driver).

The "tumbler" supports auto-mute of the speaker when the jack is
plugged with recent kernel, other chipsets don't implement that feature
yet.
