That should never happen. Unless you have a box inbetween (my answer 1-: firewall), neither client nor server should timeout a TCP connection. Application, yes; but never the stack. Which means that the /proc tweeking wouldn't help, AFAIR. It's worth a shot to maybe force telnet to actually use a keepalive (which it doesn't by default.
