I sometimes see this effect, even though I do not have CONFIG_VGA_CONSOLE enabled, on my iBook FireWire (also with a Rage M3). I'm running 2.4.16-ben0. I don't see it very often since I don't spend a whole lot of time at a text console, but it is there.
