Be warned that in most cases, 2.2.19 is more stable than the 2.4 series on powerpc. Unless you are doing development or depend on sepecific features or hardware supported only in 2.4, the 2.2 series is recommended. If you do use 2.4, be aware that the official releases from Linus at kernel.org probably won't work unmodified. Currently you will have to get source from one of the powerpc development trees. There is also a 2.4 kernel image package in unstable, which has powerpc patches applied.
