I've never experienced a machine check / reboot. Just hangs and random
disk corruption.

That's a classic example for 'better use yaboot'. If you can't, search the
linuxppc-dev list archive (and perhaps the debian-powerpc archive) for a
patch that fixes the PCI resource allocation on framebuffer init.
