Been there, done that... My experience suggests that you need to have a _useful_ monitor mode. Try the one XF86Config file at: http://www.hadess.net/files/ppc/ibook/XF86Config.ibook.dv.xf4.txt It may be desirable/necessary to replace the "r128" driver with the "ati" driver.
