Ah - I use the unstable "sid" version of Debian, not the officially released and stable "Potato" version as you might be using. It is nice if you tell a bit about your system when describing your problem - makes it easier to help without confusing :-) I see 3 ways to go: a) Figure out how to setup Xfree86 3.x using xkb (Should be possible - I had it working on my VAIO, but my TiBook only runs well only with the 2.4.x kernels which in turn requires unstable Debian packages...) Probably you have it setup correctly already. Try running 'setxkb fr' from an xterm from within X... This is from a PC running Xfree86 3.x: Section "Keyboard" Protocol "Standard" XkbRules "xfree86" XkbModel "pc105" XkbLayout "dk" EndSection b) Find unofficial Xfree86 4.x packages compiled for Potato. Either search the Debian list archives , or use http://www.internatif.org/bortzmeyer/debian/apt-sources/ (and beware you get powerpc binaries, not i386 ones) c) Upgrade your system to the (relatively-)soon-to-be-released testing (woody) or bleeding-edge unstable (sid) release. Edit /etc/apt/sources.list and replace "stable" with either "testing" or "unstable" and run 'apt-get update' and apt-get 'dist-upgrade'. Good luck! - Jonas P.S.
