I had this problem early on, I had seen similar sort of ditortion in the past with X when the frequency I was running a monitor at was too hight, so I set the frequency horizontal and vertical in the X config to some lower range and now my X is fine with no distorition in all apps (well except some weirdness in the scroll bar on the left in emacs where there is text, but it is not a problem or anything as it is not stopping it from being readable like it had been previously.)
