exiting minicom...

I'm trying to us minicom to debug a ppp connection, but I can't seem 
to use the meta key inside minicom (in a console) to access its 
options.  Neither escape nor CTL or ALT work?  Has anyone else 
experienced this problem?  How can I solve it?
