Oh, ugh. I compiled my own version of the last (Debian) version
and saw similar results (although I was only seeing the problems
with the Window Maker icons, and not the background (which may
have been loaded by GNOME)). At the time, however, I was busy and
decided it was easier to downgrade then and planned to try the
next set of packages (and didn't submit a bug report). I hoped
that the problem would have been fixed in the later version.
Given that no one has reported this bug, I'm guessing it's not
present in the i386 version, which makes me think endianess may be
at fault.
