Try dpkg --purge irda-common.
Check to see if it really is gone:
dpkg -l irda-common
If you see rc on the left side, that means the configuration files are still
around and I can't remember how to
really really get rid of everthing including the entry in the database (I'm
assuming all of this is in a database).
