I have an updated powerpc-utils package with the newworld-compatible nvsetenv at <http://www.them.org/~drow/debian/> now. Please give it a whirl, especially the newworld and oldworld nvsetenv functionality, and let me know whether it does or doesn't work in the next day or two.
I'll be uploading a yaboot package that wants this one in the next few days if all goes well.
