I believe I saw this mentioned here before, but I'll bring it up again. http://falcon.sch.bme.hu/~seasons/linux/swsusp.html talks about a kernel patch to hibernate your machine completely in software.
It strikes me as being perfect for PPC owners who don't have APM hardware. Only problem is that the latest version of the patch is against the 2.3.6-ac1 kernel. I a little afraid to run that and I was wondering if some kind kernel hacker would enjoy updating the patch for 2.3.17? (Assuming the ac patches to 2.3.6 made it into the standard dist.)
